A hafith, or hafiz, had a different meaning from today’s times. During the golden era of Islam:
A Hafith was one of the titles given to Hadith scholars, There are 6 different levels/titles( Rawi, Muhaddith, Hafith, Hujjah, Hakim, Ameer Al Mumineen of Hadith)
Mind you, A Hafith was the 3rd one.
SubhanaAllah this is person is an expert in the knowledge of Hadith as a science including its technicalities. The number of Hadith they would know at a mimumum was 200,000! yes 200,000 :)
Mind you this needed to include: The Matn( the words of the prophet SAW in ARABIC ) + The chain of narrators ( every single person in the chain they needed to know, not just their names- but who they were- they knew their biographies- subhanaAllah sometimes there was up to 50 people in just ONE chain)+ The knew the classification of authenticity of Hadith ( it may sounds really simple, but once you learn about the Science of Hadith, you will actually understand what this meant) REMEMBER THEY KNEW AT MIN 200,000 OF THESE!
AND MIND YOU THIS IS ONLY THE 3rd LEVEL/TITLE GIVEN TO HADITH SCHOLARS!
It took them about 40 years to reach this :) So subhanaAllah, next time you think you know a hadith of by heart cause you memorised in English translation and know the first person who transmitted it after the Prophet SAW , think again, you know nothing, these were the true Hadith Scholars, and something we really need to respect and appreciate inshaAllah :)
